- Save time and effort. Plan meals out carefully ahead of time (make lists)
- Keep the fun. Eliminate panic attacks and desperation. Don't wait until the last minute to gather what you need or start cooking
- Shop early. Have what you need on hand. Avoid last minute hassles, especially during high traffic times such as Saturday morning
- Avoid food contamination problems and food-borne illnesses:
- Make sure food preparation areas, pots, pans, plates, utensils, and dining areas are clean
- Toss all stale, moldy, rancid, spoiled, and old food. Look at it. Smell it. Check expiration dates. If you have any doubt, trash it!
- Store it correctly. Do not let perishable food sit around at room temperature longer than 2 hours. This includes food that has been cooked. Carefully wrap it first
- Do not let food thaw out at room temperature, e.g., on kitchen counters or in sinks
- Do not let BBQ, picnic, or road trip food sit around. Put it in an iced ice chest or a heated one
- When you buy food, get it home as soon as possible, then store it immediately. Consider bringing an ice chest (get ice) with you if you can’t make it home from the supermarket quickly
- Cook food throughly. Undercooked food, especially meat, may pose a health hazard
- Carefully clean up after the feast. Don’t forget about cutting boards, floors, and underneath furniture. Then take out the trash
- Prepare food in stages over time (refrigerate, freeze, or can, if appropriate). This makes assembling the final meal faster and much easier
- Fill'er up! That's right, eat up!:
- Keep early meals before the feast light (but be sure to eat!)
- Feel free to sample everything at the extravaganza, but limit portion size of each item (just a sample)
- CHEW SLOWLY
- Stop eating when you get full
- Get active! Burn off calories. Go for a stroll after meals and stretch. Don’t just sit there
- Avoid going to sleep 2 to 3 hours after you eat (let food at least have time to start the digestion process)
- Relax & enjoy the feast, the moment, the people, and the environment
